The choir season is from August through May/June. Each member is expected to remain active and committed to the program for the entire term. Membership in a Voices in the Laurel choir is a commitment to faithful, consistent, and punctual attendance. It is expected that rehearsals take a very high priority in each child's life. A choir member may be excused from rehearsals for illness, a death in the family, or conflict with a mandatory school performance. Missed rehearsals must be made up. There will be two opportunities per semester to make up rehearsals. If a chorister has missed too many rehearsals and does not attend the required make-up rehearsal(s), that chorister will not sing in the concert for that semester.
Regular choir rehearsals are held at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church on Tuesday evenings. Extra rehearsals may be scheduled as needed for specific events. The rehearsal times for 2008-2009:
Treble Makers 4:00 - 4:45 p.m.
Concert Choir 5:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Chamber Choir 6:15 - 7:45 p.m.
Parents play a large part in the Voices in the Laurel. Each chorister is required to have a parent/guardian help in some way with the choir. The parents help with social events, fundraising opportunities, chaperoning, ushering, and perform rehearsal and concert setup work. Parent participation is essential to the success of the Choir. There will be monthly parent meetings , held at 5:15 for Children's Choir and at 6:30 for Youth Choir. You may attend a meeting at either time. At these meetings, calendars and newsletters will be distributed and details discussed.
In addition to the many optional fundraising opportunities, choristers and their parents must participate in the fundraising activities for the choir's general budget. One of our major fundraising events is the Barbecue/Silent Auction/Talent Show, which is generally held in November. Each chorister and at least one parent or guardian must participate in putting on this event.
Parents are also asked to serve on at least one of the following committees:
